Greenshell™ Mussels
Sanford farms Greenshell Mussels at three locations in New Zealand.
In the Coromandel area we farm and harvest approximately 1,000 tonnes of Greenshell™ Mussels, the mussels from this area along with supplies from independent and contract growers are processed at a joint venture business in Tauranga (North Island Mussel Processors Ltd). We process close to 3,000 tonnes of Mussels via the NIMPL facility and it is mostly frozen half shell product.
Our largest area of farms are located in and around the Pelorus Sound in the Marlborough Sounds. Large unpolluted deepwater Sounds with a constant tidal flow of water provide ideal growing conditions for Greenshell™ Mussels. Being one of largest integrated farming/ harvesting/processing Greenshell™ Mussel operations we also operate an extensive range of vessels to seed, reseed, maintain and harvest our greenshell mussel farms. Computer monitoring of rainfall and regular water testing ensure only the highest quality mussels are processed through our Havelock plant.
The plant underwent a substantial upgrade in the year 2000, doubling its processing capacity and introducing the most up to date technology into our operation.
All of the marine farming and harvesting operations in Marlborough are based at the Port of Havelock and engineering equipment and vessels are serviced from a separate site.
In Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island at the very south of New Zealand Sanford also farms over 3,000 tonnes of Greenshell™ Mussels per annum. After growing and harvesting, these mussels are transported by our own converted fishing vessel directly to our dedicated mussel processing facility opened early 2000 in Bluff. This factory produces mainly half shell frozen products.
Pacific Oysters
In the Whangaroa and Houhora Harbours in the north of New Zealand Sanford owns farms that grow Pacific Oysters. These harbours are monitored regularly to ensure that oysters are grown and harvested from clean and pure waters. The oysters are processed in our new Kaeo processing facility into individually quick frozen and graded half shell products ready for use straight from the specially designed packaging.
King Salmon
In the southern most inhabited island of New Zealand, Stewart Island, where the water is cool and clean all year round we farm raise Chinook or King Salmon. Our natural breeding program produces eggs that are grown out to young fry at our two hatcheries located on two of the largest and cleanest rivers that have their origins in the snow fed glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand - the Clutha and Waitaki rivers. The young fry are transferred to our Stewart Island farms when they reach around 100 grams.
After two years of careful feeding and management in the pure cold southern ocean waters the fish are 3 to 5 kilograms in size and in perfect condition for harvest, processing and sale to market. The fish are transported to Bluff and processed for airfreight in fresh form or deep frozen for shipping by containers. About 3,000 tonnes of salmon are harvested each year.
